The Chicago Tribune is reporting that United Airlines plans to lay off 1,200 workers early next year. They are among the 7,000 that the airline plans to eliminate to match the shrinking economy and airline operations. It will also ground 100 airplanes.

The passenger airline sector may not be the only ones feeling the pinch. ABX Air, which handles packages for DHL Express in the United States may have to lay off as many as 7,000 employees because DHL, based in Germany, is pulling out of the domestic market.
