Ned Levi welcomes DHS’ announcement it’s dropping TSA’s draconian security screening measures for passengers flying to the US, in favor of real-time, threat-based intelligence based screening, a hallmark of the Israeli security model, but laments TSA domestically still clings to technology to scan for banned items for primary screening, instead of looking for terrorists themselves.

In his letter to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano, Ned asks for TSA to stop using the “politics of fear,” and instead “make-over” DHS/TSA, its rules, regulations and policies using the “politics of courage.” Ned suggests a number of steps Secretary Napolitano can use to transform DHS/TSA.

Ned has reviewed the new TSA rules, put into effect after Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab tried to set off an explosive device on Northwest Airlines Flight 253. Ned has concluded the rules do little to improve aviation safety, while causing passengers at best serious inconvenience, and for many real hardship.

Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Homeland Security, just finished a wide ranging discussion of the state of national security ranging from the status of securing maritime cargo and secure flight to foreign repair station rules and TSA unionization. All these subjects have been bandied about for some time, but one subject is reaching a critical point — what to do about Real ID.
