If you’ve ever looked closely at a final rental car bill, there’s everything from a seemingly endless list of taxes to various “recovery fees.” Most even have a small frequent-flier-mileage surcharge. None of these are even the optional fees such as insurance, damage waivers, extra drivers and fuel.

Last week we wrote about the Hertz bid for Dollar/Thrifty Rent a Car. This week Dollar/Thrifty are examining another bid for their company from Avis who apparently had been dragging their feet on a deal, until the Hertz loomed on the financial horizon.

In a blockbuster deal that is sure to have significant effects on the consumer rental car market, Hertz has bought Dollar/Thrifty in a $1.2 billion takeover. Hertz will regain its title as the largest rental car firm with this buyout.

I am Patient Zero for attention deficit disorder, which may explain why more than a few people with legitimate grievances e-mail me back after I’ve responded to their questions, asking me if I even bothered to read their inquiry. I did, but I was probably distracted by a screaming child in my home office or a kitten scurrying across my keyboard.

Here is an example of bad, very bad customer service at the Hertz car-rental counter. The entire sequence was caught on video tape.
