One of the things I like about contributing to this site is that it gives readers an opportunity to learn from my mistakes. Yep, even those of us who are mega-miler travelers encounter the same problems that you do. Case in point: my recent car rental from Hertz at BWI airport in Maryland.

I am Patient Zero for attention deficit disorder, which may explain why more than a few people with legitimate grievances e-mail me back after I’ve responded to their questions, asking me if I even bothered to read their inquiry. I did, but I was probably distracted by a screaming child in my home office or a kitten scurrying across my keyboard.

Here is an example of bad, very bad customer service at the Hertz car-rental counter. The entire sequence was caught on video tape. Next, comes an old-time travel reel about Chicago filmed back in 1948. It is fun to take a look at how Chicago was portrayed. Travel can be an olfactory experience, by which I mean everything smells. Even your rental car. Hertz recently teamed up with Fresh Wave to use its IAQ technology to eliminate unwanted odors in its cars. When I heard the news, I had to ask Hertz if it had a list of the worst rental-car smells. In fact, it does.

Cars are rented by the 24-hour period. While they don’t advertise it, in general, most car companies used to give up to an hour’s grace period on top of that 24 hours. That grace period is shinking these days.
