Editor’s note: We have had plenty of comments about Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines’ (RCCL) decision to go forward on schedule with visits to Labadee. Ned Levi came forward with a story supporting the efforts. Janice Hough offered her thoughts on the issue. Now, we hear from a non-profit the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST), that disagrees with RCCL’s decision to go forward with their stops in Labadee.

I just read a disheartening story about the Haitian relief efforts. Everyone horrified at the painful pictures of death and destruction in Haiti seems to want to do something. Technology has made it infinitely easier to part with your money – you can text to an ever-growing number of charities to automatically donate set amounts (it’s added to your cellphone bill). You can also go online, or call. Musicians, celebrities and companies are responding with efforts that are as reassuring about our often battered perceptions of community and humanity, as they are hopeful for help to be quickly extended.

Like many of you, I was burrowing last night, just another nightly edition of the weeks’ long effort to avoid the cold here in the frozen Northeast. Flipping from channel to channel couldn’t relieve the boredom (though I’ve got access to about 2,000 of them). Even the classic movie channel failed me, as I have seen most of its offerings lately over the holiday. Then the news got my attention. A massive earthquake had hit very close to Haiti’s capital Port- au-Prince.
