Massive snowstorms in the U.K. have closed the country’s two major airports as the Christmas season arrives. Both Heathrow and Gatwick in London have been closed and are scheduled to open later in the day. Over the rest of Europe expect cancellations and delays.

Under pressure to reduce its dominance in London airports, BAA has agreed to sell Gatwick airport for GBP1.51 billion pounds ($2.46 billion) “to a consortium involving Credit Suisse and General Electric.”

The three largest London airports are managed by one company. Depending on the particular squabble with the airport, there have been many calls for the breakup of what many see as a transportation monopoly. Now, a breakup may soon actually happen and a possible new bidder for one of the airports is raising some eyebrows.
