Baggage bins above airline seats are getting more and more crowded. As baggage fees go up, passengers are carrying more on board aircraft. But more and more travelers are starting to gate-check luggage as well. It seems to be a loophole in the airline baggage check fee system.
An announcement came across my computer screen noting the important things that American Airlines is doing with this much needed influx of cash that we all thought was necessary just to keep the airline afloat. They are sponsoring sports teams – yes, those cash-strapped teams that actually pay their players more than the airline executives get.
Buried in the recent airline earnings news was the announcement that Alaska Airlines has succumbed to charging $15 for the first checked bag. Starting on July 7th, Alaska Airways will initiate the fees. This is bad news. But their unique-to-the-industry guarantee is good news.
Last week Delta Airlines clearly stated that they do not have plans to charge the $15 first-checked-bag-fee that has been instituted by legacy carriers American Airlines, United and US Airways. This creates an unusual split between the major legacy carriers.
