With all the talk of airlines losing money in this recession, one company is making a profit, although lower than last year.

United Airlines is the first US airline to offer a luggage shipping service via an overnight courier. Passengers can use it to avoid lugging suitcases through airports, eliminate luggage missing connections, and reduce the odds of luggage becoming lost or stolen. While this may seem to be a great deal, as they say, the “devil’s in the details.”

Passengers aren’t the only ones getting hit with fuel surcharges by the airlines. Air cargo carriers, who also must deal with an increase in jet fuel prices, are passing the cost to those who ship with them. As a result, cargo volume across the United States (and other parts of the world) are seeing a decrease in volume as companies are looking harder at how they ship their goods.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating what it is calling a serious air traffic control error at the Memphis airport last week. Two planes with similar flight numbers, 527 and 257, flew dangerously close to one another after take-off from separate runways.
