fall foliage

Vermont and New Hampshire market their fall foliage as the most brilliant and ahhh-inspiring in the country. And it’s true: New England is a leaf-peeper’s paradise. But nature puts on this spectacular show all across the country. Get out and take a look.

The folk in my home state of New Hampshire will be grumbling. It seems that peak leaf peeping adventures are no longer considered to be in New Hampshire and Vermont or even in New England. Yes, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont are part of the top 10, but North Carolina tops this year’s TripAdvisor list after a survey of 2,300 travelers.

Though it is heretical to say in New England, that foliage even exists anywhere else in the country, it does. From the shimmering silvers of the Rocky Mountain aspens to the yellows of midwestern oaks and the deep red of sugar maples covering New England’s hillsides, October is the month when fall foliage is most brilliant.

The fall foliage season is upon us. Maine just announced its first official week of foliage in the far north and now the colors are creeping southwards across the country. From the reds, golds and oranges of the northeast to the brilliant yellows of the Rocky Mountains and California, here are five mountain resorts from rustic to elegant that are a perfect place to enjoy nature’s annual splendor.
