Once, airlines were at the cutting edge of technology. Flying was the first step to outer space. Autopilot controls let aircraft captains relax across vast oceans. Radar allowed planes to fly through clouds with no visibility. Can you remember the last “gee wiz” moment you had while flying?

The more the media rants about the extra charges at Ryanair, the larger the airline grows. I find Ryanair’s approach, both to its expansion in Europe and its search for ancillary revenues, fascinating and, obviously, effective.

Air France is taking a page from Delta and Northwest’s book. They are starting to charge €50 (about $63) for exit row seats on their Paris to North America routes. Air France claims the charge is in response to passenger demand. Really?

In Britain the Trading Standards Institute has tested scales used to weigh luggage after complaints from passengers. A total of 18 sets of scales were tested – 10 showed weight on the machine even before the customer’s baggage was lifted on.
