Kristin Luna reserves a car in Austin, Texas but when she checks in, her car rental company is out of vehicles. She’s free to rent from another company, but will have to pay an extra $245. Shouldn’t her car rental company or travel agent help her?

Car industry woes don’t seem to be translating to lower prices. If anything, rates seem to be higher than last year, which is prompting regular complaints from clients. Some people, in fact, who often book direct have called just to see if we can beat the high prices they are getting.

It’s now just not airlines and tour operators. Advantage Rent A Car, one of the larger discount companies, just filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and is closing two-thirds of its airport locations.

It was too good to last. Hertz’ much-welcome decision in July to charge customers who didn’t prepay for a tank of gas based on the average price per gallon in the geographical area where the car is rented is no more.

Tom Gainor pays for a rental car through Hotwire.com, but when he gets to the car rental counter in Mexico, an agent strong-arms him into buying insurance that more than doubles the cost of the car. Neither Hotwire, nor the rental company seems to care. Is there any way of getting his money back?

Why rent a car when you can share one? That’s the concept behind Car2Go, a new Israeli company that some have billed as a kibbutz for motorists. Car sharing isn’t a new idea. Zipcar, a Cambridge, Mass., company, already allows people to car-share in the States. But Car2Go operates slightly differently.
