Most frequent travelers have seen this sort of thing in the mail or in their email — a great mileage bonus offer from their favorite airline. Sometimes it really is a great deal sometimes these offers should be outlawed.

So now that Continental is part of Star Alliance, there are more ways than ever for United “Mileage Plus” and Continental “One Pass” members to get miles. In addition, these are especially valuable miles that qualify towards elite status.

Even if frequent flier miles don’t go as far as they used to, we still love them. And we really love bonus mileage promotions. When most carriers started giving bonus miles for new routes or flying a certain number of times in a month, the bonus was automatic.

Everybody loves earning frequent flyer miles. And bonus mile promotions are even better. Except when they are not. “Up to 50,000 bonus Mileage Plus miles per trip!” A great deal, right? Not exactly.
