Every so often it doesn’t seem like the airline gods are cooperating with even the airlines. British Airways (BA) just had two back-to-back emergency landings and Virgin was faced with a passenger who slashed his throat. Not a stellar day.

Perhaps even more important that the merger agreements being considered here in the U.S.A., mergers in Europe are changing the landscape of international travel. This consolidation was just punctuated by the BA/Iberia agreement last week. During the past year or so, Lufthansa’s purchased Swiss, Austrian, Brussels and bmi. And before that, Air France and KLM created a jointly run airline.

This weekend, facing a four-day strike, BA has plans to operate 75 percent of their flights, a 25 percent increase from last weekend’s efforts. The beleaguered airline has made arrangements for 18 percent of its passengers to fly on other airlines.

This last weekend, British Airways flight attendants went on strike to protest … well, I’m not sure. But it was serious enough for them to sit out three days over the weekend and plan another four days at the end of this week. Last month Lufthansa pilots went on strike for a day. Greek and French air traffic controllers also joined the picket lines.

Amanda Scheerer’s honeymoon plans included renting an apartment in Barcelona’s historic La Barceloneta district, visiting the Salvador Dalí museum and touring several famous Spanish wineries. They did not include a strike by British Airways.

Over the weekend, the Department of Transportatin (DOT) announced that they have given the oneworld Alliance provisional antitrust immunity. This brings oneworld into line with SkyTeam and Star Alliance and is the final nail in the coffin of advancing competition between scores of airlines in the international arena.
