I submitted a request to ride in an Amtrak locomotive, but that is such a rarely-approved privilege I had little hope it would ever actually happen. Imagine my delight when I was told arrangements had been made for me to ride in the “head end” of Amtrak’s daily Empire Builder during a Chicago-to-Seattle trip.

The Cardinal is not a big train – just one sleeping car, three coaches, and a diner – and it runs only three days a week over a meandering southerly route between New York and Chicago. But, in between those frenetic metropolitan centers, the Cardinal passes through some of the loveliest rural and wilderness areas in the entire eastern United States.

Ned Levi reports first hand about the security breach which occurred Sunday at Amtrak’s Philadelphia 30th Street Station. No gate agent or security were assigned to the 5:15am Regional train to New York.

Ned discusses his experience having boarded the wrong train at Amtrak’s New York Penn Station due to Amtrak’s poor directions and lack of track signage showing which train is on each track at the station. Ned suggests Amtrak use Philadelphia’s regional rail authority, SEPTA, example, of how to provide essential signage for passengers.

For years, many travelers wouldn’t consider an electronic ticket if there was a paper alternative, now, they are so reliant on ticketless travel that they make a lot of mistakes. The same with maps and GPSs.
