This last weekend, British Airways flight attendants went on strike to protest … well, I’m not sure. But it was serious enough for them to sit out three days over the weekend and plan another four days at the end of this week. Last month Lufthansa pilots went on strike for a day. Greek and French air traffic controllers also joined the picket lines.

One of the more interesting airline soap operas playing in Europe over the past three years has been the Ryanair romance of Aer Lingus. Two years ago, Ryanair offered the Irish national carrier almost €1.5 billion. Last April, the low-cost carrier proposed again with a €748 million offer. None of these entreaties were accepted.
