When I was writing for publication purposes the editor in charge of content told me that people will stop to read bad news but will ignore the "feel good" happy type stories. Her example was the tabloids where almost no content is of the "let's show humans at their best" type.
Unfortunately, her view was shared by most of the media outlets and, as far as I can tell, still is to this date. Tragedy sells, I guess. Sad, isn' t it?
