On the east side of the UP, the border between the US and Canada really seems almost imaginary. You don't really think about it until you have to wait in line now to go through customs on the way to the supermarket. I'll wave the next weekend I'm up north. Oh, just a kind request. Could you keep your moose (meese?) from swimming the St. Mary's river so often. They keep trampling the garden and scaring the dog. ![]() |

) I always enjoyed hiking around Oimet Canyon before it got all fancy and they put up guardrails and such. I was there one spring in the 70's right after some poor tourist forgot to set the parking brake and his pickup and camper rolled right over the edge at the overlook. I suppose they've cleaned up the mess at the bottom by now? |

Deano - I am ashamed to say that I haven't been to Ouimet Canyon..
I have technically lived in PA and Ft William so I consider myself a dual citizen .lol. Yes the terrorizing goes both ways - especially when the drinking age in WI was only 18 and it was 19 in Ontario - WI has now changed to 21.. We do a girls roadtrip to DLH about once a year (very fun party town).. Isn't the world a small place!!! Nicole

I suppose you've never been to Kakabeka Falls (sp?) either. LOL. Um, yeah. Even though we would visit the sites, the real attraction was hitting the bars in a new town at night. Our northern cities certainly like to party! Not that I want hordes of people stampeding up there to spoil it for me (or Nichole), but I must say that Hwy 17 around the north shore of Lake Superior in Ontario is one of the most spectacular (and often overlooked) drives one can take in North America. I think it surprises people who have this vision of the middle of the continent just being all flat and boring. It's kind of a secret treasure in our own back yard. Just have your brakes checked out before you leave. |

Kakabeka Falls I see probably once a year (just saw it last weekend) - it is truely beautiful!!
The Circle Tour around Lake Superior is an awesome site to see for sure!! During the fall when the leaves are all changing colours WOW!! Or in winter when the trees branches are all snow lined and so white - some fantastic pictures get taken along this route for calendars... oh an of course the animals from moose, deer, black bears, squirrels, birds... I love doing just the short jaunt between here and Grand Marais in the summertime - Took a couple of blankets picked up a Sven and Olies pizza in Grand Marais (a must do) - a six pack from the Holiday gas station and picnic on the lake - they have some really nice beach area with the softest rocks... Our annual DLH girls weekend is going to be in September this year and I can't wait!! I will make sure that my brakes are up to snuff when I go to the Canyon for sure!!

I've been thinking of my time in MI the past few days, and I need help with a little memory-jogging. I remember going to a wonderful little town--the drive from Marquette was gorgeous--where we had lunch at this little restaurant. There was an old building next to it that was apparently the original bar, and supposedly an old movie was filmed there--12 Angry Men or Witness for the Prosecution or some such thing. Does anyone know the town & restaurant I'm talking about? Or did I dream the whole thing?

Are you sure you're not thinking of "Escanaba In Da Moonlight," Travel?
No, I think you are referring to the Thunder Bay Inn in Big Bay where "Anatomy of a Murder" was filmed. (It was called something else back then.) It doesn't get much more "remote" for a shooting location in middle America. There's a cool B&B up there, BTW, located in a lighthouse. |
