They are just giving back the extra day they stole earlier in the last century.

This phenomenon (missing an entire technical calendar date) happens every day to scores of people who take late evening westbound flight departures from the west coast across the Pacific. I once had a client who insisted on changing her departure date to Australia, despite expensive airline change penalties, when she figured out she would miss the anniversary date of her late husband's passing otherwise.
