Wow! I'm checking my cards today and will look closer at the covers that will protect them. That is scary.

It's not quite as bad as they make it look, the effective range of the scanner is about 6 inches.
That said, the banks claimed it would cost them and merchants too much to encrypt the data... duh. And don't get me started on why passports are not encrypted.. |

L., I have seen a scanner which can work from about a foot. The real problem is if you're in a crowd where everyone is really close to each other, such as coming out of an arena or stadium, or at a concert, for example. Just walking down the street, currently it's unlikely you'd be scanned.
Mrs. N. and I have been carrying our Passports and Credit Cards in protective sleeves for some time now. Personally, I think they're worth it. |

Technology can be frightening at times! And it is ironic that Duct Tape (in the example above) is the antidote. Like they say, it can fix anything!

I went even lower tech, just as an experiment, I lined the inside of the bill pocket of my wallet with a folded piece of Reynolds wrap, then went over to my friends supermarket and tested their RFID reader. Complete block.

That's good to know! Just thinking about it - you could make it more permanent without getting too involved. A piece of cardboard the same size as your credit cards covered in aluminum foil could be inserted in your wallet on the outside of the cards. Or you could use aluminum flashing and cut it to credit card or even passport size without adding bulk.
