Default Christmas Travel Cluster Bomb

I thought I would share the "joy" we're having for pre-holiday travel at my local airport of Grand Rapids, Michigan. (GRR)

Saturday things came to nearly a standstill with heavy fog, both at the local airport but also in our region at many of our inbound hubs with numerous flight cancellations. Of course, flights were already so fully booked in and out for the following couple of days that many were told to expect delays in being reaccommodated of up to 48 hours.

Sunday early morning we had a freak December thunderstorm blow through with hurricane force winds, only 71 mph at the airport proper (and at my house) but up to 78 mph in the region. More early morning delays to recover, plus we then moved immediately into a winter storm situation with sustained high winds and gusts up to around 50mph throughout the day causing further cancellations and delays. Things are looking more and more grim for those on an ever growing list of holiday travelers hoping to be reaccommodated. The heavy snow kicks in just to make things more interesting, making the ground transportation option less and less desirable, even more flight cancellations and delays as the day wears on into evening.

Then the main airport computer server crashes for unrelated reasons.

Then the airport loses all power, for unrelated reasons.

We're cursed. Santa hates us.

The airport is up and running on emergency (generator) power for essential services this morning. If you are one of the lucky few who have a confirmed reservation on anything, you can check in and go through security, only to go sit in a dimly lit concourse with no heat (our temps are in the teens this morning) or services (forget that hot cup of coffee or a Cinnabon) and hope you get the chance to climb down the stairs and walk across the snowy tarmac (the jet bridges don't work) to board an aircraft that may or may not actually fly somewhere.

Who knows? The departures/arrivals boards aren't working because of those computer server and/or lack of actual power issues.

Welcome to Siberia.

Wow, I sure hope things get better soon. It doesn't sound like they could get too much worse. Hope no one's trying to get to your house from far away.
Merry Christmas!

Fortunately nobody in my family travels for the holidays. However, I have some clients who are melting down in a most un-jolly manner.

And the local weather man just came on and said we've been put into a new weather advisory today for freezing drizzle. Well, why not? It just makes things even more interesting.

Bless you, Deano. You deserve an extra egg-nog!! My big concern was for a family of 6 leaving this morning via ATL for CAN. It's a huge booking that I have been fretting about...so far so good, they have my home number if the need it.

Just heard an update from the airport. The Red Cross has been dispatched to provide blankets, food and beverages for stranded passengers. I'm thinking they should also be handing out little stockings with a supply of Valium in the toe.

The cause of the computer outage has been revealed, one of the causes of some of our flight cancellations. The powers that be decided that this weekend, one of the busiest travel periods of the year, would be a good time to attempt migrating servers. Good planning.

I don't think I'll complain about the fact that I'm at work today and not going anywhere for Christmas (now 2 weeks from now is a different story!!).

Merry Christmas!

Further proof that IT people don't necessarily live in the real world!
