Here's a perfect example of why travelers must give themselves extra time!

Today in the Northeast part of the US is a perfect example of why people have to build in flexibility and extra time in their flight schedule, etc. to ensure, to the extent possible, they'll be at their destination on time for a tour, cruise etc.

At this point all Northeast US airports are running delays of 1-3 hours due to weather. And the thing is most of the weather problems aren't even in the Northeast. The problems are mostly in the South and MidWest. In the Northeast, there are some low ceilings in the Northeast, but that's only affecting Newark, JFK, and La Guardia Airports.

Plus it's late Friday afternoon which means the NE always goes to hell, even if a crow breaks wind over Omaha.

I have business commuters who get stranded at La Guardia nearly every Friday night and they keep asking me what they can do to avoid that situation in the future. My reply?

"Don't schedule a flight out of La Guardia on Friday night."

I got caught in these delays last night out of Dayton to Newark. My 5:20PM flight didn't board until 8:25. To top it off, they rush us on the plane after a minimal cleaning (The seat pocket in front of my seat still had the previous passenger's dirty tissues, yuck), close the door, push back, and THEN tell us we are on a ground hold for 30 minutes.

My scheduled 7:40 arrival got us in after 10. After waiting 40 minutes for my bags, schlepping to my car and driving home 20 minutes, I was in the door at 11:15PM. Not too bad, you say? That is on a clear weather day on the entire route my plane took. If we added rain, or heaven's no, snow, it would have been much worse.

Don't look now, but THIS is the future of air travel for we road warriors.

I'm actually astounded that my flight to the UK went wheels up only FIVE minutes after scheduled time on a Friday evening! That and secruity took less than 10 minutes. It was kind of frightening.
