It's awful, and it happens more often than people realize. We've never had it happen to a ship we were on in Alaskan waters, but each time we've been in Alaska we've read about it happening to another ship.

True, but you'd hardly think about Princess in that role. I'd think Carnival would be the one. After all, they're the ones with all that big bait going overboard.

We get dead whales washing ashore on the north coast and also in SF Bay more than we like to hear about. The reports are that the cause of death is usually due to being hit by a ship of some type, like a tanker or cruise ship.

We had one of these situations here in Seward about five years ago. I was working on the ship that morning, and it was quite a disappointing site.

The timing of these incident was a very interesting coincidence. The drama around our election to vote for the cruise ship initiative was in full swing. The cruise lines were campagning, showing how much our economy is helped by the cruise ship passengers. The locals were well into the thinking that 'the big evil cruise ships are ruining our State.' The election was to be held on Tuesday, and the ship pulled into Seward with the whale on the bulbous nose for all to see on Saturday morning. It was plastered all over the news, giving fuel to the 'cruise ships are evil' thinking, so the initiative passed. I've always wondered about the timing??????
