As we've discussed before, these ships are mini-cities, especially the larger ones we're now seeing sail the seas. Although the Carnival Paradise can only carry little more than 2,000 passengers and had a crew just short of 1,000, it would be unrealistic to not believe the ship would sail with virtually a full cross-section of a city's typical populace.

I'm not surprised a "dealer" was cruising, just like I'm not surprised when I hear about any kind of criminal, especially thieves, cruising.

I never cease to be amazed by cruise ship passengers' unrealistic beliefs that they are safer on a ship than at home, and that therefore, they can drop their guard, and not take standard precautions to prevent themselves from being the victim of crime.

In this case the cruise line was the crime victim, but more often than not it's the passenger victimized, in part, by their own naiveté. Of course, no one deserves to be a victim of crime, but sometimes people don't do enough to prevent it.

I love cruising, and I have a great time doing it, having lots of fun, all the while taking prudent precautions to ensure, to the extent possible, the fun doesn't end because I've become a crime victim.

Being careful and sensible, and using sound judgment while cruising doesn't mean you won't have fun. To the contrary, it helps you stave off tragedy, which would eliminate the fun.

Default Carnival passenger thrown in brig after allegedly raiding drug cabinet

Several news outlets in Los Angeles are reporting that a passenger on a recent voyage of the Carnival Paradise was thrown in the ship's brig after allegedly raiding the vessel's medicine cabinet for morphine and other drugs.
LA Weekly says Phillip John Struble, 30, pleaded not guilty Monday in a Los Angeles court to a burglary charge related to the incident.
The news outlet says a federal affidavit alleges that Struble broke into the medicine supply area of the Los Angeles-based Carnival Paradise during a mid-February cruise, and a subsequent search of his cabin turned up everything from morphine to hundreds of Percocet tablets reported missing from the ship.
Vials of phenobarbital and Xanax pills also were reported missing.

I am never surprised by the fact that parents let their kids wander the ship all hours of the day and night. Either they don't care or to naive to think anything bad won't happen aboard the ship.
