A little confused how to do this

You'd think with all my functioning brain cells this would be an easy concept for me, but it's not.

Currently, I have cable internet service, with the cable line feeding into my cable modem, which then connects to the desktop/laptop by USB.

I want to enable wireless access so I can be in another room on my laptop. The cable modem is fairly new so I don't want to outright replace it. Would I need to purchase a wireless router, which the modem would feed to, in order to access a wireless signal?

What do I need to do in order to make it a secure connection?

BTW, spend the little extra for a wireless pre-n capable router. You get longer range now (even with a G card in the laptop) and higher speeds when you get a new PC later and put N in it.

Most new cable modems have wireless access built in. I had to look for the WEP # and SSID # . I access the internet on my laptop thru my FIOS router modem. I would suggest you call tech support for your cable company and they should be able to walk you thru the link up.

Thanks for the replies.

Right now, my desktop is not working and I am using my laptop, so getting an ad hoc connection through the desktop won't work.

And, from what I can determine on my cable modem, there's no way I'm gonna get a wireless signal from it. (It's a Linksys CM100).

I suppose this means I'll have to fork out the cash for a wireless router. Blegh.

Wired is so last century. Call the cable company and tell them to give you a mew modem/router with wireless capability and come out and hook it up. You pay a monthly fee for technology to them

We have a Linksys wireless router plugged into our cable modem. Its been chugging along for 6 years now.
