I have a choice of transferring 50,000 points to miles on either Continental or Delta Airlines. This would be from American Express Membership Rewards. I hope to use the miles to go to Europe. Which has a better program that may have off-peak seats to Europe from the East Coast (DC area). (I only have about 1,000 miles currently on both FF Programs)

I think it works both ways - but I know that if you put them in Continental, you can book flights on either Continental or Delta.
In fact Continental Airlines OnePass rewards are valid for travel on Continental Airlines, Continental Express, Continental Micronesia, Continental Connection carriers, SkyTeam Alliance: Air France, Aeroflot Russian Airlines, AeroMéxico, Alitalia, CSA Czech Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Delta Connection (excluding Delta Connection flights operated by American Eagle), Delta Shuttle, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Korean Air, Northwest Airlines and Northwest Airlink. Other valid OnePass reward partners include: Aero República, Air Europa, Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air, American Eagle, Amtrak, Cape Air, China Southern Airlines, Copa Airlines, Emirates, Hawaiian Airlines, Island Air, and Virgin Atlantic. |

Having said that, you can go to delta.com and search right from the front page for award availability (click "SkyMiles Award Ticket") as that will search DL, NW, and CO.

going to delta.com only searches for frequent flyer space on Delta. Continental has its own site.Or you can call
and Delta will check on all their partners. |

That is not correct. Delta's online search function looks for space on Delta, COntinental, and Northwest.

Actually, Northwest seems to often offer more Delta space than on their own carrier. I find that frustrating because I prefer the Northwest hubs for connections and would rather be on the carrier with the most frequencies (by far) from my home city. |

I will go with Delta based upon the fact that I have been able to cash in miles every time that I wanted to take a transatlantic or transpacific first class trip with one of their airline partners or Sky Team partners.

I agree with ARW. I am not that fond of Delta, but Continental hasn't overly impress me either. More importantly, Delta has more of a presence where you are (Virginia), than Continental would and would probably be easier to deal with on such anyway. Just my thinking.
