I get at least 4 of these every day, from different parts of the world. I hear from our computing services department that they have stepped up in targeting University addresses. I guess they figured out that we're usually more liberal and contribute more money to causes, but missed the fact that we're also typically a little more educated than the average bear.

The heat intensifies...

In just the past week, I've gotten more than 10 of these solicitations. B-O-R-I-N-G.

Okay, now the Nigerians are using French to spam us....goodie. The sad thing is I actually know someone who fell for this scam to the tune of over 6K -- thought he could use the money to help his elderly, frail parents.

What's next, German, Chinese or Norwegian spam?

Here's a site if you want to take a look at the stuff that's been sent to peoople. The authors themselves actually reply and it's an interesting (sometimes funny) back and forth:

Hi, I received this mail too. I'm french, I'll try to translate it for you.. I'm not very good, because too young, but better than google bot I guess ;)

Before anything else, I'd like to apologize for my intrusion in your private life. My name's Meite Soumaila, I word in the Compatibility Department of the Ivory Coast Citibank.
A bank account was opened into our bank in 1985, and since 1990 there hasn't been any bank operation. Today, there are 4.5 millions of american dollars on this account.
After looking carefully in every files concerning this count, I became aware that I could get this money for me, if I managed to transfer it on a foreign account.
This account's owner was John Kouakou (who's dead), an expatriate, director of Petro-Technical Support Services INC, engineer in chemistry, who died from a car accident.
Nobody currently knows this account exists. This account doesn't have an owner anymore, neither in his family nor his work.
I'd like to transfer this account's money in an account, in an other country, but I don't know any foreigner. This is how I got the idea of contacting you and propose you to transfer this money on your bank account, to share the half of it with you.
I know this message will surprise you because we didn't know each other before, but be sure it is a great opportunity I'm giving you.

Please answer me quickly.
Yours sincerely,

Miss Meite Soumaila

And the subject of the mail is : I APOLOGIZE !!

I get at least a half dozen emails of this scam and its variations every day. Thank goodness my email client (Eudora) has a great junk mail filter, which puts all this stuff into my junk box for a quick scan, to see if there's any good mail in there, before deleting it all, include the porn, viagra and cialis ads, other pharmacy ads, as seen on Oprah ads, etc. I don't know about you all, but last year, 89% of my incoming email was spam. What a waste!
