The key, here, is that United (and the others) should recognize that a high level loyalty card in one's wallet keeps that traveler, well, LOYAL.

I was inured (broken back) and couldn't fly for six months. I lost my Premier Exec status with United this year after many years (4 in a row and 6 of the last 7). Due to my injury, seating is more important than ever.

Now that I've lost status, there is simply no reason for me to stay with United.

It's a business decision and their choice, but I am giving $40,000 in rough revenue to other airlines due to this.

After many years at Premier Exec I only flew 34,000 miles 2 years ago. Though I asked to give me a mileage challenge for early 2008 to be able to keep my status, United gave me no leniency. I flew enough miles by the end of Feb to at least keep basic Premier then didn't fly them all year. When I asked them again to give me temp status or match the other carriers (mid-level status with 2 carriers) they again didn't care. So this year I've gone up a level with Delta and still have my Gold with Continental.
If I could fly 25,000 miles with United in 2 month, they should be able to work with me.
