When I read this letter my first thought is why would anyone buy a ticket on South African from Virgin Atlantic, why not buy it directly from South African or from a travel agent? It seems to be adding another unneeded layer that makes it that much more difficult to deal with when something goes wrong.

I guess this tale of woe is one of the reasons I still prefer to deal with a travel agent. My colleagues at work think I'm crazy to pay $60 to a travel agent to book a round trip ticket from New York to Toronto, but I tell you, when that plane is at Pearson taxiing back to the terminal because they can't get a landing slot at La Guardia and they tell you that you can use your cell phone it's nice being able to call someone who can put you at the head of the line for a ticket change - if I'd booked on my own, I'd have to get in line like everyone else.

The only time I book direct with an airline is when I'm using frequent flyer miles. Every other time, I want an insurance policy.
