Our first experience with a house rental was in Kissimmee, FL. We rented from loyaltyusa.com, and they are wonderful to work with. Going during the off-season the weekly rate to rent a four-bedroom house complete with swimming pool and game room was much less than a hotel would have cost us. Loyalty USA's homes are just a few miles from Disney World. The best part of the whole thing was going back to the house after a long day and being able to spread out, relaxing by the pool, preparing dinner in the full kitchen, playing pool in the game room. It sure beat being confined to one small hotel room!

I have to admire Karen Kinnane for her innovative manner of exchanging homes with persons she meets in her travels.

Entertaining houseguests in our retirement is one of our greatest rewards. Four years ago, we became members of Hospitality Club, an international hospitality exchange organization free to members (www.hospitalityclub.org). As a member, one cannot request financial compensation for accommodations he or she provides for guests.

There of course is the responsibility for carefully checking members’ trustworthiness. We have relied heavily upon the comments made by those who have had previous contact with members we have under consideration. Our experiences so far (entertaining three parties in our home and interacting with three parties while traveling throughout Germany) have been most rewarding.

We have nothing but praise for Hospitality Club.

I've generally had good success renting places on the VRBO site and found some great bargains. The one thing I would recommend is to try to find places that accept credit cards rather than doing things on a cash/check basis only. The only problem I've ever had was getting a deposit back from someone that I paid by check. Otherwise, it's the way to go, especially for stays of a week or more.
