I've had a version of this issue with Travelocity before - when my flight was canceled due to an ice storm and I tried rebooking out of Chicago instead of hoping something might eventually leave out of Madison. After I got nowhere with the wonderfully helpful Travelocity agents, I just called American. They endorsed my ticket to United, and I was on my way. I only used Travelocity because they offered a ridiculous price for flight and hotel from Madison to Vegas. I haven't used them since.

A couple of things here Chris, your comment about using a professional travel agent is accurate, up to a point, you said "Sure, a human agent might charge a booking fee, and may not always have the lowest price". In my experience, Travelocity and the other online booking sites actually average higher prices than my travel agent. The reality is that sometimes one will be less expensive than the other and to imply otherwise is inaccurate.

The second thing is doing an exchange online is not an easy thing and frequently requires the intervention of a human. Had Martha tried doing this online, without human intervention she would have been in even worse shape as she wouldn't know why her exchange wasn't working and never would have been able to complete her transaction.
