I am still confused! I just booked a cruise on Late June which leaves New York and goes to Cananda and returns to New York. From what I read, this is a closed loop cruise. So, do I need a passport or not? Some articles I read indicate no and some seem to suggest I need it. As to they people who say just get a passport..I can understand that mentality, but, If I don't plan on travelling Int'l in the next serveral years, I'd rather wait until I really need it. Anyway, if anyone knows 100% defininitively whether I need one or not, please post.
BTW..Carnival cruise line stated I do NOT need it.

so if you go on a "closed loop" cruise and you use a passport as your proof of citizenship --- do you need to be concerned if your passport expiration date is less than 6 months away?

I have just spoken to two cruise lines and both say they are requiring passports as of June 1 for all travelers. It seems even the cruise lines may still be confused about what is required and what is not.

What is the big deal with Americans? Just get a passport - the rest of the world needs them when they travel to the USA - get the passport and you will always have extra government issued photo ID in case you ever lose your drivers license you can use the passport to get the DL reissued immediately . ..

Whats the big deal? With states issuing drivers licenses to illegal aliiens what good is that as a form of ID any longer?

Anita,
HERE WE GO!
Go Steelers...
I will be in Tampa tomorrow for THE GAME!
I will be glad to do a feature story for you...what angle do you want?
Please advise.
I can also get you an interview with ANDREW STOCKEY, former Sports Director and now PRIMARY ANCHOR for WTAE-TV, Pittsburgh, PA. He is in Tampa covering the festivities for the past week.

More likely than Frenaye's scenario in the article - what if you're out drinking too much at Carlos and Charlie's and you miss the ship? What if it's the last port before home? You're obviously going to have to fly home. (or find a trambilla...I mean a bus - better start learning the language since you don't have that passport. You better hope you left a big tip at Carlos and Charlie's...)

Anita thanks for the update. I know you always try to present the correct information and I am glad you were able to finally got the correct answer. Is it any wonder everybody is confused about these rules if the people who are supposed to know about them (State Department) can't get it correct? The hassles you've gone through just show the best thing to do is get a passport, then you don't have any worries about whether there is an exception and whether you qualify for it.

Okay folks --
Just heard from Joanne Ferreira, International Travel and Admissibility, and Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Kudos to Wrona and Bobbye -- the "closed loop" rule is not expiring on June 1, 2009. Ms. Ferreira stated this ruling came down in December.

Okay...gotta fix the article now. AND it will be right!!

Thanks Tripsophytes

Best
