Even if you have your own insurance most insurance companies will not cover a driver unless the car owner has given permission for the driver to drive. How do they do that? - on the rental agreement in exchange for money. It's a heads they win - tails the consumer loses situation. Can we say buyer beware loud enough and often enough? After all, some of them are taxes, and the municipalities couldn't care less where/how you booked the car. As for the "cancellation fee" on prepaids, do I get this right: they charge you $5 if you don't cancel, as a fee to cover the cost for what?! Excuse me? Since when do car rental companies hold cars for prepaid reservations? I flew in to Palm Springs a couple of years ago, having prepaid for a Hertz compact car to be used when I was there. When I got to the counter, I was told that there were no compact cars left, but that they could give me an SUV instead. Not feeling comfortable driving something as large as an SUV, I refused and ended up without a car. They certainly didn't hold my car for me!
