Put your airline reservations number on your cell phone speed dial. If you have elite status, put the elite number on speed dial. If you travel a lot, join an airline club. In addition to being a quiet place to work or relax, they can often rebook you in case of a cancellation, and there's no line of a hundred people in front of you.

You may also want to invest in a set of noise-cancelling headphones. They are expensive, but they also work wonders.

Oh, and I was so upset yesterday when flying cross-county. My earplugs were in my bag, which was in the overhead since I had a bulkhead, window seat. A baby started squealing just as we began to taxi so I couldn't get up to retrieve them for quite some time. Next time, the earplugs go in my pocket.

Great tips, James.

I have had a number of cancellations recently. Much to my surprise, the airline actually called me (well, their computer did) and offered up an alternate itinerary...in one case before I even knew about the cancellation. All I had to do was ask for a new boarding pass.

Great column. I might suggest that if the tickets were purchased via a travel agent (a real live human) that they may be your first line of defense for a cancellation. They are using the same system as the carrier and most likely they (or their 24 hour service) will not be as busy as the airlines. So not only are you going to the front of the line waiting for the ticketing agent in the airport, you are going to the front of the line in the phone queue.
