And if you're going to the boonies, be sure to stick a travel size roll of toilet paper in your bag. (Or even cheaper - a pocket size pack of tissues.) Is there anything that doesn't come in travel size now?

I'll second the Fenix flashlight. Inexpensive, and make Maglights look like trash

Do what I do - wrap a yard of duct tape around a "borrowed" hotel pen and use that.

The Gorillapod was one of those things that I bought, used twice, then sold. It's junk.

And forget the mini Maglite - get a Fenix flashlight. Maglites are puny and weak compared to the blinding power of a Fenix.

Good call on the duct tape--I can't think of how many times I needed a roll while on a journey. From holding the drapes shut so I could sleep in an east-facing room, to closing down the air vent in a room with no atmospheric controls.

As for the 3G card, I'm very happy with my Moto Q9h as a tethered 3G modem and it's one less thing to pack and care for.
