Where are our Congressional watchdogs these days? When it comes to counter-terrorism issues, they are all hiding. No one wants to seem to be soft on terror even as our pockets are being picked by misdirected spending and millions of Americans are facing more and more travels hassles.

In the Big Apple, they do it bigger. Someone once told me that as I was walking through the office-building canyons in midtown. It was a good thing I wasn’t driving through these same canyons in a taxi. I may have been being fleeced without my knowledge.

New GPS technology married with the fare meter has uncovered a long-running taxi-driver scam that has been foisted upon unwitting taxi riders for years. Drivers were flipping the meter on for “suburbs” rather than “city” and raking in higher fares.

A fix is being installed to tell passengers exactly what fare is activated on the meter. About 40 percent of the NYC cabs are already equipped.

In yet another sign that the Transportation Department is serious about protecting the rights of consumers, the government this morning fined US Airways $40,000 for failing to disclose the full price consumers must pay for air transportation.

“When consumers shop for air travel, they have a right to know how much they will have to pay,” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a prepared statement, adding, “We will continue to ensure that airlines comply with our price advertising rules.”

Do airline customers have a right to know taxes and fees before buying their ticket?

After a long day of negotiations between Senate aides and committee staffers over wording regarding when passengers will get to know what taxes and fees will be added to their airfares, there was no final agreement. That means the Menendez amendment to the FAA Reauthorization bill will come up for a vote sometime today, and the fate of how we purchase airline tickets and view airfares will hang in balance.
